I like it when a book has a lot happen in one place, unravelling all the personal aspects of a household that would usually be private. I could imagine it working as a play, one of those farces where various things happen behind the other characters’ backs. It sounds like good writing plus a good story. It was via The Guardian’s Nicholas Lezard who described the novel’s atmosphere as ‘a bit like The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, but with jokes.’ Not a bad description all in all.
